  11.           on MagnaRAM 1.0, refer to the Quarterdeck Technical Note

  16.  General MagnaRAM 2.0 information:
  17.      
  18.  Quarterdeck's MagnaRAM is an easily configurable utility designed
  19.  to increase your available memory, performance and multitasking
  20.  capabilities within Windows 3.1x, Windows for WorkGroups, and
  21.  Windows 95.  MagnaRAM provides you with more available memory and
  22.  performance by using powerful memory multiplying technology.
  23.  MagnaRAM's memory multiplying techniques provide:
  24.  
  25.   * significant amounts of additional Windows memory for your
  26.     programs by compressing data, both in RAM memory and on your
  27.     hard disk.
  28.  
  29.   * performance benefits to your system by minimizing the use of
  30.     slower virtual memory.  The more you use your high-speed
  31.     system RAM, the less you must access the much slower virtual
  32.     memory.
  33.  
  34.  System Requirements:
  35.      
  36.     * An IBM or IBM-compatible PC or PS/2 with 386 or higher
  37.       processor
  38.     * 4 MB of RAM.  Performance improves with the amount of
  39.       installed memory
  40.     * Windows 95, or Windows 3.1x / Windows for WorkGroups
  41.       running in 386 Enhanced mode
  42.     * MS or IBM-DOS 3.1 or later, or Novell DOS
  43.     * Windows Virtual Memory feature must be enabled (recommended
  44.       Permanent swap file).
  45.      
  46.      
  47.  General Troubleshooting Issues:
  48.  
  49.   1.  Q. Is MagnaRAM compatible with disk compression programs?
  50.  
  51.       A. MagnaRAM is compatible with disk compression programs
  52.          such as Stac Electronics' Stacker and Microsoft's
  53.          DoubleSpace and DriveSpace. MagnaRAM does not interact
  54.          directly with your hard disk, or with disk compression
  55.          programs -- it lets Windows swap all data to the disk.
  56.  
  57.  
  58.   2.  Q. Where is the Uninstall icon that is documented in the
  59.          manual?
  60.  
  61.       A. Some revisions of the MagnaRAM User Guid make an
  62.          erroneous reference to an uninstall icon in the MagnaRAM
  63.          folder for Windows 95.  On Windows 95 systems, use the
  64.          Add/Remove Programs feature located in the Control Panel.
  65.          On Windows 3.1x / Windows for WorkGroups systems, use the
  66.          MagnaRAM uninstall icon located in the MagnaRAM group.

  68.  
  69.   3.  Q. I have deleted MagnaRAM, but I can't reinstall it.  My
  70.          machine says that MagnaRAM is already installed.  What
  71.          can I do?
  72.  
  73.       A. On Windows 95 systems, remove any lines referring to
  74.          MagnaRAM in your System Registry.  For example:
  75.  
  76.          1.  Click on "Start" and choose the "Run" option.
  77.          2.  Type in REGEDIT <enter> to load the Registry Editor
  78.              program.
  79.          3.  Click on the Search menu, then click on the Find
  80.              option.
  81.          4.  Type MAGNA <enter>.  If you find anything that
  82.              refers to MagnaRAM, press <DEL> to remove that
  83.              section.
  84.          5.  Click on Find Next and continue searching until
  85.              no more are references found.
  86.  
  87.          On Windows 3.1x / Windows for WorkGroups systems, remove
  88.          any lines referring to MagnaRAM located in the SYSTEM.INI
  89.          and WIN.INI files.  For example:
  90.  
  91.          1.  Click on File/Run from the menu of Program Manager.
  92.          2.  Type in SYSEDIT <enter> to bring up the System
  93.              Editor program.
  94.          3.  Click on Window and select SYSTEM.INI.
  95.          4.  Locate the line in the [386Enh] section that ends
  96.              with MAGNARAM.VXD and remove it.
  97.          5.  Click on Window and select WIN.INI.
  98.          6.  Locate the line in the [windows] section that ends
  99.              with LOGO31.EXE and remove it.
  100.      
  101.   4.  Q. I loaded MagnaRAM and now Windows 3.1x / Windows for
  102.          WorkGroups stops responding when I am using it.
  103.  
  104.       A. Below is a list of some things to check about your
  105.          Windows configuration:
  106.  
  107.          - Make sure that you are using a PERMANENT Windows swap
  108.            file.  This can be verified by clicking on the 386Enh
  109.            icon in Control Panel, which is by default in the Main
  110.            program group.  Make sure that you are using the swap
  111.            file on an UNCOMPRESSED drive.  If you are using disk
  112.            compression software such as Stacker or DriveSpace,
  113.            use the configuration utilities included with those
  114.            applications to increase the size of your uncompressed
  115.            drive.  Then you can create a permanent swap file on
  116.            that drive, and still have room for any other programs
  117.            that are needed on the compressed drive.  Please
  118.            contact the manufacturer of the compression software
  119.            you are using or consult the manuals if you are unsure
  120.            of how to change the size of your uncompressed drive.
  121.      
  122.          - While you are checking the swap file settings in the
  123.            386Enh section of Control Panel, verify that 32-bit
  124.            file access is not enabled OR lower the cache size to
  125.            1024K or less.
  126.  
  127.          - Using MagnaRAM's setup utility, lower the size of the
  128.            compression buffer that MagnaRAM uses, and increase the
  129.            threshold setting to 30-40%.
  130.      
  131.          - Edit the SYSTEM.INI file located in the Windows
  132.            directory and change the order of the drivers in the
  133.            DRIVERS= line. Try moving MAGNARAM.DLL to the beginning
  134.            of that line.  If that does not resolve the conflict,
  135.            try placing MAGNARAM.DLL at the end of the DRIVERS=
  136.            line.
  137.  
  138.   5.  Q.  I installed MagnaRAM on my system and Windows appears to
  139.           be running more slowly.
  140.  
  141.       A.  MagnaRAM automatically configures itself to your system,
  142.           but sometimes it will require fine tuning in order to
  143.           work at its peak performance.
  144.  
  145.           For Windows 3.1x or Windows for WorkGroups users, try
  146.           going into MagnaRAM's settings section (the screwdriver
  147.           icon) and change the PageOverCommit setting from 8 to 3.
  148.           This affects the amount of linear (Windows) memory that
  149.           is available to your system.  Reducing this number will
  150.           lower the total amount of linear memory you have
  151.           available; however, system performance may increase.
  152.  
  153.           Also, for both Windows 95 and Windows 3.1x / Windows For
  154.           Workgroups users, try decreasing the MagnaRAM
  155.           Compression Buffer size at an increment of 20-30 percent
  156.           until you get an improvement in performance.
  157.  
  158.   6.  Q.  MagnaRAM does not appear to be doing much. Is it loading?
  159.  
  160.       A.  Check to see if MagnaRAM is loading.  On Windows 95
  161.           systems, use the Registry Editor (REGEDIT) to search for
  162.           any lines containing "MAGNA". For Windows 3.1x / Windows
  163.           for WorkGroups, edit the SYSTEM.INI and search for the
  164.           DRIVERS= line that refers to MagnaRAM.  If this entry is
  165.           not present, MagnaRAM is not properly installed.
  166.  
  167.           If there are Registry entries containing "MAGNA", check
  168.           the MagnaRAM statistics window and make sure that
  169.           Compression Buffer Size is set to 10% of the machine's
  170.           physical RAM. MagnaRAM's compression techniques may not
  171.           take effect immediately, and may not be readily noticed
  172.           at Windows startup.
  173.      
  174.   7.  Q.  MagnaRAM is loaded and working fine, but I no longer get
  175.           any sounds in Windows 3.1x / Windows for WorkGroups.
  176.  
  177.       A.  After checking that your sound card is setup correctly,
  178.           edit the SYSTEM.INI file located in the Windows
  179.           directory. Check the DRIVERS= line that references
  180.           MagnaRAM.  It is possible that when MAGNARAM.DLL was
  181.           added to that line during installation, the driver for
  182.           the sound card was "bumped off" of the line, especially
  183.           if the DRIVERS= line is unusually long. Reinstalling the
  184.           driver(s) for the sound card may solve this problem. You
  185.           should consult you sound card manual for the necessary
  186.           files needed on this line.
  187.      
  188.   8.  Q.  Why does MagnaRAM fail to load, and why can't I restart
  189.           it?
  190.  
  191.       A.  You may find that MagnaRAM is is failing to reload some
  192.           of its files properly. Uninstall MagnaRAM with its
  193.           built-in UnInstall utility, and make sure that the lines
  194.           added to the SYSTEM.INI shown on page 30 of the manual
  195.           are removed.  If not, manually remove them.  Then
  196.           re-install the program.
  197.      
  198.   9.  Q.  I am trying to install MagnaRAM, but it will not accept my
  199.           serial number nor proceed to the next screen when I
  200.           click on the NEXT button.
  201.  
  202.       A.  If the NEXT button won't highlight to allow you to go to
  203.           the next screen, please verify that the Company Name
  204.           field is filled out.
  205.      
  206.  10.  Q.  MagnaRAM doesn't give me enough memory to run an
  207.           application.
  208.  
  209.       A.  Sometimes a program requires a certain amount of
  210.           physical memory to run.  For example, some computer
  211.           assisted drawing (CAD) programs require 12 megabytes of
  212.           physical memory in addition to any virtual memory they
  213.           use.  The system may simply need more physical RAM for
  214.           such programs.  If MagnaRAM does not provide you with
  215.           enough LINEAR memory to run a program, try increasing
  216.           the size of the permanent Windows swap file. You also
  217.           try to decrease the Compression Buffer Size at an
  218.           increment of 20-30 percent.
